Counties (States) of Portugal
The Regions
The Historic Regions
These regions were initially called
counties. From the 16th century onwards, they were called
provinces.
In 1832, the north was broken up into
Minho and
Douro.
And Beira was divided into
Beira Alta and
Beira
Baixa.
A new division in
districts was made in 1835.
A new division into provinces was made in 1933.
In the northern part, the provinces were:
Minho,
Alto Douro, and
Trás-os -Mounts.
The
Beira Litoral and the
Beira Transmontana
were created.
Estremadura was divided into
Estremadura and
Ribatejo.
Alentejo was divided into
Alto Alentejo and
Baixo Alentejo.
In 1936, a new division takes place and the provinces of Trás-os-Montes and Alto Douro will form just one province:
Trás-os-Montes and Alto Douro. Beira Transmontana, on the other hand, ceases to exist. In 1959, the districts returned to being the most
important and in 1976 the administrative provinces are extinct, being only, since then, regional references for the Portuguese.
