The former province of Low Beira (Beira Baixa), located in central-eastern Portugal, comprised the present Castelo Branco District, in
addition to the municipalities of Pampilhosa da Serra (which belongs to the District of Coimbra) and Mação (belonging to the

In the Distrito of Castelo Branco
Castelo Branco
Capital of the district and the municipality of Castelo Branco, the city of Castelo Branco (34,000 inhabitants), besides being a
major regional center, is an important tourist destination thanks to its medieval Templar Castle, Episcopal Palace, its gastronomy
and cultural life. Lively nightlife.
Belmonte
Land of the Great Navigator and Discoverer Pedro Álvares Cabral, who was born in the Castle of Belmonte.
Belmonte is also the land of DOP Beira Interior wine production.
Covilhã
Main urban center of Cova da Beira. The municipality has just under 52,000 inhabitants (the city, 36,356 inhabitants). For several centuries, it was the capital of wool (Real Fábrica das Panos, created by the Marquis of Pombal in 1763). But above all, Covilhã provided men and support to carry on the ultra-marine adventure of the Discoveries.
