The Freguesia de Santa Maria Maior, which corresponds to the Historical Center of Lisbon, was created in 2012 and implemented after the October 2013 elections; occupies the territory of a dozen ancient parishes (with the smallest areas of the capital and of Portugal), among which the parishes of São Nicolau, Sé and Castle, to name just three.

Fall in resident population
With 1.74 km², the Parish of Santa Maria Maior has a population of 21,167 inhabitants (INE, 2021). In 2011, the parish had 20,131 inhabitants (idem), with a drop in the resident population in this period.

Location

With the River Tagus to the south and southeast, the Parish of Santa Maria Maior is limited, to the north, with the Parish of Arroios, to the northeast, with the Parish of São Vicente, to the west with the Parish of Misericórdia and to the northwest, with the Parish of Santo Antônio.
