Parish of Carnide
The parish of
Carnide, of very ancient origin, was created in 1279, as a large
rural parish northwest of
Lisbon. I also understood
Pontinha
and
Casal Falcão.
Carnide, with just over 18,000 inhabitants, is
the fifteenth most populous parish
from Lisbon.

The
Parish of Carnide is located in the extreme northwest of the City of Lisbon. From the Cathedral of Lisbon
It is 10.8 km to JF de Carnide by car. Carnide is a frontier parish: further west,
is the municipality of Odivelas.
Area and Population
Declining resident population
With 3.69 km², the
Parish of Carnide has a population of 18,029 inhabitants
(INE, 2021). In 2011, the parish had 19,218 inhabitants (idem), with a drop in population
resident during this period.
Low population density
With 4,886 inhabitants per km², the small parish of
Carnide has a density
population slightly below the average of parishes in the Portuguese capital.
Residential neighborhood
From an old parish with a rural vocation,
Carnide (which once belonged to the former
municipality of Belém) has become a peaceful, safe and pleasant place to live. In 2011 it had
more than 23,000 inhabitants having, since then, lost more than 20% of its resident population in 10
years.

Sanctuary of Our Lady of Light

Church of Our Lady of Light, also known as the
Sanctuary of Our Lady of Light
it is of great importance not only religious but also historical: there is the tomb of Infanta D. Maria. O

The Colombo Shopping Center
Centro Comercial Colombo is an excellent option for shopping in the parish. There are more than 400
convenience stores and services, supermarket (Continente). It is worth checking. Good shopping!

About the Parish of Carnide
The
Parish of Carnide, in the past, was already a stronghold of wealthy classes, due to its climate and
tranquility, more recently, of the Lisbon middle class. This "great village" squeezed between the center
of Lisbon and the dormitory municipality of
Odivelas
has attracted new inhabitants.
Metro Stations
The presence of three subway stations - in addition to the Carris buses (buses), makes commuting much easier.
journeys between the center of the Portuguese capital and the parish of
Carnide.
A bit of history
Place of greatest importance for the history of Lisbon and Portugal. More recently, the
Parish of Carnide
was created in 2012, with the merger of the parishes of
S. Joseph, Heart of Jesus and Saint Mamede.
Luz
The housing nucleus of
Luz played an important role in the consolidation and development
from the parish of
Carnide. The construction of the
Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Luz, in
Largo da Luz, was one of the factors that boosted its growth.
Fair of Light
One of the oldest fairs in Portugal, it takes place in
Largo da Luz every October, since the 16th century.
