Parish of Beato
The
Freguesia do Beato,
in the east zone of the capital, its name originates from "Frei António da Conceição, friar of the Convent of Santo António
de Xabregas, who lived here at the end of the 16th century. He gained a reputation for holiness, so the people called him Beato,
designation that was extended to the convent and later to the whole territory". [Lisbon City Council]
In
Freguesia do Beato, port activity (Port on the Tagus River) and cargo is of great importance
for the local economy.
