Almada

Almada, Setúbal - City (95.000 inhab.) and municipality (174.030 inhab.) of the district of Setúbal, Almada is situated to the south of Lisbon, with strip of coastline. From Almada to Lisbon, there are just over 12,5 km. Almada is at the south bank mouth of Tagus River.

Monastery and History

Castle, Monastery and History - In addition to the famous castle, in the Monastery of Alcobaça there are the tombs of D. Pedro and Da. Inês de Castro.

It was in the parish of Aljubarrota where the important battle for the independence of Portugal was fought, the Battle of Aljubarrota (1385). Portugal commanded by D. João I defeats the armies of Castile and Leon commanded by D. Juan I. See also Batalha.
