North Region, main wine producer in Portugal
The
Norte (Douro, Minho and Trás-os-Montes) is also responsible for about 30% of the country's wine production
(cf. according to IVV data for the 2020-2021 harvest), the traditional
Wine from the Douro,
employed in the preparation of the world famous
Port Wine.
Behind the Douro (with 1,351,949 hl, 2020-21), come Lisbon (with 962,323 hl, 2020-21) and Minho (with 866,985 hl, 2020-21), according to
the data published by the IVV. In mainland Portugal, the smallest producing region is the Algarve (with 23,650 hl, 2020-21).

Lisbon, largest Producing District
The
Lisbon District is the largest producing district of
Wines in Portugal, with
a total production of 932,927 hl in the 2020-2021 campaign [1].
The
Vila Real District is the second largest producing district of
Wines (and the first for Douro Wines
from Portugal, with a total production of 857,672 hl in the 2020-2021 campaign [1].
The
Distrito de Viseu is the third largest producing district of
Wines (and the second largest for Douro Wines
from Portugal, with a total production of 853,679 hl in the 2020-2021 campaign [1].
Torres Vedras, the most important wine producing municipality in Portugal
The 3 most important wine producing councils (municipalities) in Portugal are:
Torres Vedras (Lisbon Region),
Almeirim
(Region of Santarém) and
Alijó (in the Douro), with 480,091 hl, 318,437 hl and 282,162 hl respectively (IVV, 2020-2021 campaign).

SOGRAPE, the largest company in the sector in Portugal
SOGRAPE is Portugal's largest company in the wine sector. The
Mateus rosé (sold worldwide in over 20 million
bottles) is the best-selling wine on the planet.
Portuguese Wine Exports
The five biggest importers of Portuguese wines are:
France, United States, Germany, Brazil and United Kingdom, according to
IVV provisional data for May 2021. In 2020, the main importers of Portuguese wine were:
France, United States, Germany, United Kingdom and Brazil. In other words: Brazil surpassed the United Kingdom.
