Main Wine Producers in Portugal. Wine in Numbers
In this section, visitors can find the most recent figures on wine production in Portugal, according to official data
released by IVV for the 2020-2021 campaign.
1. North Region, main wine producer in Portugal
The
Norte (Douro, Minho and Trás-os-Montes) is also responsible for about 30% of the country's wine production
(cf. according to IVV data for the 2020-2021 harvest), the traditional
Wine from the Douro,
employed in the preparation of the world famous
Port Wine.
Behind
Douro (with 1,351,949 hl, 2020-21), come
Lisboa (with 962,323 hl, 2020-21) and
Minho ( with 866,985 hl, 2020-21), according to
the data published by the IVV. In mainland Portugal, the smallest producing region is the
Algarve (with 23,650 hl, 2020-21).

2. Lisbon, largest Producing District
The
Lisbon District is the largest producing district of
Wines in Portugal, with
a total production of 932,927 hl in the 2020-2021 campaign [1].
The
Vila Real District is the second largest producing district of
Wines (and the first of Douro Wines)
from Portugal, with a total production of 857,672 hl in the 2020-2021 campaign [1].
The
Distrito de Viseu is the third largest producing district of
Wines (and the second of Douro Wines)
from Portugal, with a total production of 853,679 hl in the 2020-2021 campaign [1].
3. Torres Vedras, the most important wine producing municipality in Portugal
The 3 most important wine producing councils (municipalities) in Portugal are:
Torres Vedras (Lisbon Region),
Almeirim
(Region of Santarém) and
Alijó (in the Douro), with 339,326 hl, 318,437 hl and 282,162 hl respectively (IVV, 2020-2021 campaign).

4. Douro
In the Douro, the largest producers are the district of
Vila Real, which is the second largest producing district of
Wines from Portugal, with a total production of 857,672 hl in the 2020-2021 campaign.
A little behind, comes the district of
Viseu, which is the third largest producing district of
Wine from
Portugal, with a total production of 853,679 hl in the 2020-2021 campaign.
The third producer of Douro wines is the district of
Guarda, with 373,519 hl, that is, less than half of the production of Viseu and the
double the production of
Bragança (160.720 hl) [1].
5. Minho
In Minho, the district of
Braga is the main producer (205,638 hl). Production in the district of Viana do Castelo
reach 187,954 hl.
The main producing councils (municipalities) are
Celorico de Basto (Braga), with 60,956 hl,
Melgaço (Viana do Castelo) with
53,760 hl and
Ponte de Lima (Viana do Castelo) with 53.107 hl.
6. Alentejo
In Alentejo,
Évora, with 878,317 hl, is the main producing region, well ahead of
Beja,
with 237,555 hl according to IVV data for May 2021.
Reguengos Monsaraz (206.677 hl),
Redondo (153.142 hl) and
Borba (135.824 hl),
all in the District of
Évora, are the main wine producing councils in Alentejo.
