The Parish of São Vicente, in the northeast part of the central area of Lisbon, results from the aggregation of the former parishes of São Vicente de Fora, Graça and Santa Engrácia.


The parish of São Vicente is the nineteenth most populous parish in Lisbon.

The Parish of São Vicente is located in the vicinity of the Historic Center of the City of Lisbon. It is limited to the west by the parish of Santa Maria Maior, the Sé de Lisboa, on the extension of Avenida Infante Dom Henrique.


Area and Population

Fall in resident population
With 1.99 km², the parish of São Vicente has a population of 13,956 inhabitants (INE, 2021). In 2011, the parish had 15,339 inhabitants (idem), having experienced a significant drop in population resident during this period.

A small parish in the Portuguese capital, São Vicente is the nineteenth most populous parish in Lisbon.

Population density
With 7,708 inhabitants per km², the parish of São Vicente has a population density above average.

The main attractions of the parish of São Vicente include the Monastery of São Vicente de Fora, from the second half of the 16th century, the former Convent of Santa Apolónia, the Pancas Palha Palace, the Estrela de Ouro Neighborhood, the Campo do Convento da Ordem de Santa Clara, the Chapel of Senhora do Monte, the Cinema Royal, the Convent of Mónicas, the Convent of Santa Clara – Armament Factory, the Convent of São Vicente de Fora, Santa Apolónia Station, Feira da Ladra, the Church Convento da Graça, the Church of Santa Porciúncula, the Water Museum, the Palácio do Lavradio – Supreme Military Court, the Resende Palace – Military Casão, the Sinel de Cordes Palace – Triennale, the National Pantheon, the Sapadores Barracks, the Vila Berta, Vila Sousa and other attractions.

The Monastery of São Vicente de Fora

The Monastery of São Vicente de Fora, whose construction dates back to 1582, located in the Parish of São Vicente, is a religious building of great historical importance since it was built on an old temple built by King Dom Afonso Henriques, first king of Portugal.

Location

With the River Tagus to the south and southeast, the parish of São Vicente is limited, to the north and northeast with the parish of Penha de França, to the northwest with Arroios and to the west, with the parish of Santa Maria Maior.

Avenida Infante Dom Henrique

Avenida Infante Dom Henrique is one of the main arteries of the parish and of Lisbon, head north along the River Tagus.
