The parish of
Santa Maria Maior, which corresponds to the
Historical Center of Lisbon ,
was created in 2012 and implemented after the October 2013 elections; occupies the territory of a dozen ancient
parishes (with the smallest areas of the capital and of Portugal), among which the parishes of São Nicolau, Sé and
Castle, to name just three.
Santa Maria Maior is
the second least populated parish in Lisbon .

With 1.74 km², the
Parish of Santa Maria Maior has a population of 21,167 inhabitants
(INE, 2021). In 2011, the parish had 20,131 inhabitants (idem), with a drop in the resident population
in this period.
