Parish of Penha de França
The Parish of
Penha de França,
whose name comes from its patron saint, Nossa Senhora da Penha de França, is
located in the northeast part of central Lisbon. The parish was created in 1918 by the merger of the parishes of
Beato, Santa Engrácia and São Jorge de Arroios.

the eighth most populous parish in the municipality of Lisbon.

The
Parish of Penha de França extends from the right bank of the Tagus River (southeast) to the Miradouro da
Peña de France.
The
Freguesia de Penha de França is located in the extreme west (southwest) of the City of Lisbon. From the Cathedral of Lisbon
to the Padrão dos Descobrimentos Monument, in Belém, are 9.2 km away.
Area and Population
Growth of the resident population
With 2.71 km², the
Parish of Penha de França has a population of 28,485 inhabitants
(INE, 2021). In 2011, the parish had 27,967 inhabitants (idem), having seen growth in population
resident during this period.
Tourist attractions
In the
Freguesia de Penha de França is a popular and residential neighborhood, relatively quiet.
And, in fact, still undiscovered by Portuguese or foreign tourists.
However, there are some points of interest. Among the attractions for visitors, the highlights are:
the
Miradouro da Penha de França, the Miradouro do Monte Agudo, the few churches, including the Baroque Church of
Nossa Senhora da Penha de França, the bars and restaurants.
Penha de França Viewpoint
The
Miradouro da Penha de França, located on Rua Marquês da Silva, is a little better known than
the following offers an interesting and new view of the City of Lisbon. The

Location
With the
River Tagus to the southeast, the
Parish of Penha de França is limited to the north by
the Parish of Areeiro, to the northeast and east, with the Parish of Beato, to the west, with the Parish of Arroios and, to the
south, with the Parish of São Vicente.
Other Attractions
The Church and Convent of Madre de Deus (National Tile Museum), Fort or Bastion of Santa Apolónia (remains),
Alto de São João Cemetery; convents, churches and many other attractions.
Mouzinho de Albuquerque Avenue
Avenida Mouzinho de Albuquerque is one of the main arteries of the parish and of Lisbon, towards
northwest-southeast. To the east of the parish, Avenida Infante D. Henrique goes north, along the
River Tagus.
