The parish of Estrela, one of the new parishes of the capital, comprises the old parishes from Lapa, Santos-o-Velho and Prazeres; it is located west of the Lisbon Historic Center. The origin of the name is due to a Benedictine convent founded in 1572, dedicated to Nossa Senhora da Estrela.

The parish of Estrela is the fourteenth most populous parish in the municipality of Lisbon.

Area and Population

Stable resident population
With 4.6 km², the parish of Estrela has a population of 20,308 population (INE, 2021). In 2011, the parish had 20,128 inhabitants (idem), with practically no drop in population resident during this period.

Average population density
With 4,376 inhabitants per km², the parish of Estrela has a population density slightly below average.


Tourist attractions

The Águas Livres Aqueduct, Former College of Nobles, Avenida da Liberdade, House of 11 Doors, House of Almada Negreiros, Chafariz do Rato, Cinema São Jorge and Cinemateca Portuguesa; Monument to the Marquis of Pombal, elevator of the Lavra, old palaces, churches and many other attractions.

Avenida da Liberdade

Avenida da Liberdade, with its wide streets (90m), wide sidewalks decorated with gardens, kiosks and sidewalk in the Portuguese style, is one of the main arteries of Lisbon. The avenue connects Praça dos Restauradores to Praça Marquês de Pombal.
